Spanning a massive 820,000 square meters, this comprehensive complex was engineered to meet the most stringent international standards for hosting elite global athletic events.

Beyond its functional capacity, the center has become a global architectural landmark, recognized primarily for its innovative use of ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) membrane technology, which covers the primary structures in a glowing, translucent skin.

Integrated Facilities & Structural Innovation

The precinct is designed as a world-class multi-venue sports infrastructure, capable of managing massive spectator flows while providing elite-level performance environments.

  • The Main Stadium: With a capacity of 61,000 seats, the stadium is the heart of the complex. It is engineered for multi-purpose utility, accommodating both FIFA-standard football and international track and field competitions. Its wide-span coverage represents a major milestone in large-scale stadium infrastructure.

  • The Indoor Arena: This multi-functional gymnasium features a state-of-the-art “Suspended-Dome” (string-supported dome) structural system. This advanced engineering choice allows for a column-free interior with 18,000 seats, ensuring unobstructed sightlines for basketball, volleyball, and large-scale cultural performances.

  • Specialized Training Hubs: The complex also integrates an Olympic-standard aquatics center, a professional tennis center, and baseball facilities, all linked through a centralized logistics network.

Design Philosophy: The "Pulse of Sports" & Fluidic Geometry

The architectural concept, titled “Pulse of Sports,” seamlessly integrates modern athleticism with Dalian’s regional identity as a maritime hub. The stadium’s geometry rejects the rigidity of traditional concrete, opting instead for fluidic architectural curves.

The exterior facade is designed to resemble the stitched leather of a football. To achieve this “spherical” texture on such a massive scale, engineers utilized thousands of individual ETFE cushions. The color palette—a blend of maritime blue and pristine white—mimics the movement of ocean waves, reflecting the essence of the sea and Dalian’s coastal geography.

Technical Masterpiece: The World’s Second-Largest ETFE Structure

From a structural perspective, the Dalian Sports Center is a record-breaking achievement. It holds the title of the world’s second-largest single-building ETFE membrane structure, surpassed only by the “Water Cube” in Beijing.

  • Scale and Scope: The total area of the ETFE membrane facade exceeds 100,000 square meters.

  • Structural Synergy: The facade is supported by a sophisticated secondary steel framework that allows the lightweight ETFE cushions to maintain their inflated profile while withstanding significant wind loads from the Yellow Sea.

  • Self-Cleaning & Durability: ETFE is highly resistant to UV degradation and salt-spray corrosion—vital for coastal environments. Its low-friction surface ensures the facade remains pristine through natural rainfall.

Installing over 100,000 square meters of ETFE required unprecedented precision. Each hexagonal and pentagonal cushion was tensioned to exact specifications to ensure uniform internal air pressure.
