Project Feature: Zaozhuang Stadium’s Iconic PTFE Tensile Envelope

Large-scale sports venue with white PTFE tensile roof and parametric geometry

Project Details

Project Architecture & Capacity

The Zaozhuang Stadium is a premier example of medium-to-large scale sports infrastructure designed to meet professional-tier athletic standards

The facility covers an expansive 54,000 m² footprint with an elliptical plan measuring 260m x 238m.

Designed to accommodate over 31,000 spectators, the stadium meets professional-tier athletic standards, making it a versatile hub for international competitions, cultural events, and high-occupancy commercial performances.

Parametric Design & Fluidic Geometry

The building’s envelope is a masterpiece of parametric waveform geometry. The design utilizes varying curvatures of steel and fabric to create a rhythmic, undulating skin that mimics fluid motion.

This Biophilic Design approach creates a seamless transition between the built environment and the surrounding landscape. The visual contrast between the pristine white PTFE outer skin and the vibrant red-coated structural accents provides a dynamic aesthetic that changes with the angle of natural light.

Structural Engineering: The 48,000 m² PTFE System

The most critical technical component of the stadium is its massive tensile membrane envelope, covering approximately 48,000 m².

  • System Composition: The structure is composed of 48 roof segments and 24 facade panels, meticulously integrated into a complex arched steel framework.

  • Inclination Precision: The facade is set at a precise 80° inclination relative to the ground plane, a design choice that optimizes both aerodynamic performance and efficient drainage.

  • Tensioning Excellence: Every panel was precision-engineered to ensure uniform stress distribution, maintaining structural stability under high wind loads and varying environmental conditions.

High-Performance PTFE Material Specs

For permanent sports venues, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) coated fiberglass is the industry’s gold standard. SkyTensile utilized this material to ensure:

  • Superior Self-Cleaning: The low-friction surface allows the roof to maintain its brilliant white finish through natural rainfall, significantly reducing long-term maintenance costs.

  • Visual Comfort: With a light transmission rate of 10%-15%, the membrane provides soft, diffused daylighting, eliminating harsh glare and shadows on the field for optimal broadcasting and viewing.

  • Class-A Safety: PTFE is a non-combustible material with exceptional fire resistance and a service life exceeding 30 years in demanding climates.

Structural Durability and Engineering Challenges

The structural integrity of the Zaozhuang Stadium roof is engineered to withstand complex load scenarios, including extreme wind pressures and potential snow accumulation. To support the 48,000 m² envelope, the arched steel truss system was subjected to rigorous wind tunnel testing and finite element analysis (FEA). This ensured that the tensioning force (pre-stress) applied to the PTFE panels remains stable over the long term, preventing fabric fluttering or structural fatigue.

Furthermore, the connection details between the PTFE membrane and the steel nodes utilize high-grade stainless steel hardware to prevent galvanic corrosion. This attention to detail is what allows our tensile structures to maintain their safety and aesthetic appeal in diverse environmental conditions, from humid coastal regions to arid inland climates.

Sustainable Impact and Energy Efficiency

Beyond its visual grandeur, the PTFE tensile system serves as a high-efficiency environmental filter. By leveraging the material’s high solar reflectance and low thermal emissivity, the stadium significantly reduces the “heat island effect” often associated with massive concrete structures.

The soft, diffused light transmitted through the membrane roof creates an optimized microclimate for spectators, reducing the perceived temperature by several degrees during peak summer months. This natural climate control, paired with the reduced need for artificial daytime lighting, translates into substantial operational energy savings, aligning the project with global green building sustainability goals.
