ETFE Structure: Hongcheng Commercial Plaza

Guangzhou Hongcheng Plaza single-layer ETFE fish-scale roof by Skytensile

Project Overview

The Hongcheng Plaza ETFE tensile membrane structure is a world-class architectural landmark located in the core of a premier International Central Business District. Spanning a total complex area of 110,000 sqm, it integrates high-end retail with sustainable transit-oriented development (TOD).

Innovative "Fish-Scale" ETFE Design

The highlight of the project is the 9,800-square-meter “double carp” feature. Utilizing single-layer ETFE membrane structures, this design creates a unique “fish scale” aesthetic. Beyond its beauty, the ETFE roof provides critical eco-friendly functions, including natural lighting and an integrated rainwater collection system, supporting the undulating green landscape.

Structural Engineering & Aesthetics

Supported by large tree-like columns and stainless steel shells, the ETFE membrane roof resembles two swimming carps—symbols of harmony and prosperity. This lightweight fabric architecture allows the central garden space to extend into the building interiors, creating a seamless “Central Park” experience while preserving the surface environment.
